he heard the call. His heart skipped in his chest as he leaned out over the ships bow. Wood strained beneath his body and he felt the wind lash his cheeks. He heard the sirens call again and started to lift a leg up. Darkness shrouded his mind and the sound of the song was all he could hear. She was calling him.
Suddenly, ahead, his daze was broken by a shape looming from the water. The huge creature flew impossibly up, then crashed back, breaking the spell.
The man trembled and backed onto the deck. He turned and half ran down to his cabin, locking the door behind him.
The quiet of the night was broken only by the splashing of the waves against the hull, and the far off call of a lonely whale.
